The Caveman or Paleo Diet

The Paleolithic diet, also known as the Caveman or Paleo diet is a diet based on what we assume cavemen would have eaten in ancient times; around 10,000 years ago. The diet sustained man for about 2.5 million years, and these are times when humans had to be very fit. Therefore the idea is that applying these principles today, will help you lose weight too.

The Caveman Diet Plan is based on ‘commonly available modern foods’ such as meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, roots and nuts. However, things such as grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar and processed oils are avoided. These foodstuffs wouldn’t have been available to man 10,000 years ago and therefore aren’t included in the Paleo Diet Plan.

The Paleo Diet has been popular since the 1970s, conceptualised by Walter L. Voegtlin; a trained gastroenterologist. It has since been featured in many medical journals as an example of a good diet. Many people in medicine believe that the human body has adapted to what our ancient ancestors ate over 10,000 years ago and therefore those are the foods we should stick to in order to stay healthy.

Apart from losing weight, the Caveman or Paleo Diet Plan will also help you increase your general energy levels. Our ancestors had to battle with ferocious beasts so their diet would have been able to take this. The natural products in the diet will also help detox your system, resulting in you feeling much cleaner and better about yourself; metabolism will also be reduced thus helping you reduce weight even more. Some people also report that following the Caveman Diet has a spiritual side to it – it has been known to bring out your inner animal instinct and thus increase your senses and become more in tune with your body’s wants and needs.

Unlike most other diets, the Paleo Diet does not put you on a strict, regimented plan like some other diets, which some people might miss. However, following a non-regimented plan is much more natural and easier to stick to.

The plan follows a multi-stage approach. In the first stage, you are allowed to ‘feast’ once a day on anything you like – pizza, burgers and chips, anything. You will come to realise that you don’t actually enjoy those foods that much. After this stage, you should be more in tune with your body. You then move on to Stage 2 and stay there for a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 8 weeks. This is where your weight loss happens. You finally finish the programme on Stage 3 which helps to you eat at healthy times and thus keep your weight off.

Overall the Caveman or Paleo Diet is one of the best ones out there, especially if you want to eat lots of natural foods and not be limited to certain times to eat every day.
